Mask Replacement

Patient conversation guide

Effective treatment gives you comfortable, optimal results.

When your supplies are working at optimum performance, you will be able to tell the difference—from a comfortable good night's sleep to feeling awake and refreshed every morning. The most important step in achieving optimum results is to inspect and replace your supplies regularly.

The following may indicate it is time to replace your supplies:

  1. Headgear has become stretchy or velcro has become worn

This can lead to unnecessary overtightening to maintain your seal and ultimately result in discomfort and ineffective therapy. Also, it's important to know that old headgear can trap bacteria from sweat and moisture, which can lead to a bad odor and/or skin irritation.

  2. Silicone cushion or tube-up silicone frame has a yellow tinge, residue buildup, rough feel or signs of cracks

This can lead to increased discomfort from skin irritation and air leaks, ultimately resulting in ineffective therapy.

  3. Silicone cushion has become stiff

This may require an increase of the headgear tension to prevent air leaks, consequently increasing discomfort and causing skin irritations/indentations.

Sleep therapy masks generally last three to six months, depending on usage and cleaning frequency.

Regular inspections of your mask are important to proactively identify replacement needs. Supplies should be replaced at the first sign of damage or wear and tear. Using masks in good condition will help make sure patients get a proper seal. They will also be more comfortable and more likely to experience the benefits of treatment.

Patients may be entitled to replace equipment per the schedule below. They should contact their insurance provider to learn what replacement options are available to them.
